“Our problem is that we assume prayer is something to master the way we master algebra or auto mechanics. That puts us in the “on-top” position, where we are competent and in control. But when praying, we come “underneath,” where we calmly and deliberately surrender control and become incompetent.”
–Richard J. Foster
Reading this was one of those times where I wish I’d said that. Makes perfect sense to me, especially when I think of all the times I feel my prayers have gone unanswered and I have somehow failed. Foster reminds me, for good reason as I often forget, that I am woefully incompetent and definitely not in control. Which by no means I should stop praying.
I need to be reminded that prayer isn’t about being in control. Prayer is the ultimate surrender of control. How can I be more like Christ than when I am in prayer? And boy, there is never a shortage of things to pray about.
In His service,
Keith
