“Do not be afraid, Abram.
I am your shield,
your very great reward.”
A forcefield. Ah, how many times have I watched or read about a superhero who among his arsenal is a forcefield…an impenetrible shield that wards off bullets, magic spells and death rays. If just that single power isn’t enough to sign up to be a defender of justice what is?
There are no shortage of events to remind me that it’s a pretty evil world out there. Unfortunately an event like the one in Newtown are all too horrifying. Through it all, what a joy to know that we have a Shield.
You and I. Our Shield does not stop bullets. It does not stop evil spoken against us. Nor does it prevent us from getting sick or seriously ill. Or worse. But God does protect us. He is Our Shield. Let us not get caught up in debates about where God was on 9/11 or that Friday in Newtown. May we not doubt His omnipotence, His omniscience, or His Omnipresence, for His ways are not my ways. He says He is my Shield, so He is.
On this day, the day before we celebrate His coming, let us rejoice in I AM.
“When the wicked advance against me
to devour me,
it is my enemies and my foes
who will stumble and fall.
Though an army besiege me,
my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
even then I will be confident.”
