“Faith, like light, should always be simple and unbending; while love, like warmth, should beam forth on every side, and bend to every necessity of our brethren.”
–Martin Luther
I found it interesting to get these words this morning and spend some time chewing on them. Mainly my mind is trying to wrap its arms around faith, as Luther describes it being “unbending”, manifesting itself as love, which is to be bent. By Luther’s words they seem as opposite. Yet, faith, as that rock, allows me to go out in love towards others in various forms, whether a simple hello, a hug, or something much larger. If I asked five people what “love” is and I’d probably get 25 different answers. This is why love must be “bondable”. It does not change at the core from which it springs, which is faith.
If you may allow me to pull a verse out of its larger context –
“The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk.”
–1 Timothy 1:5-6
Then these words –
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. “
–Matthew 5:8
WOW! It is no wonder that God COMMANDS us to love. Who among us does not want to see God?
