Think Different

“An old error is always more popular than a new truth.”
German proverb

There are so many slogans and proverbs and clichés around that I am constantly bombarded by them and don’t even realize it any more. Many I have heard so many times I either forget what they originally were intended for (or I never knew in the first place). In my world it is usually called branding—trying to get me to associate a set of words with a particular corporation or product. But with so many things I hear and see, I ask myself what do those words mean to me?

What do these make you think of?
You’re in good hands with Allstate.
Don’t leave home without it.
Reach out and touch someone.
They’re G-r-reat!
Have it your way.
Nothing comes between me and my Calvins.
M’m M’m Good.
Put a Tiger in Your Tank.
Who’s in your five?

The interesting things with slogans and proverbs and all that is that can be triggers to remind me of something in my Christian walk. Were they intended that way? Surely not, but that doesn’t mean they are not of value as reminders of to Whom I belong and to what I have been called:

You’re in [the best] hands with [God].
Think different. [God requires it.]
Nothing comes between me and my [God].
Put [God] in Your Heart.

Heck, some slogans don’t even need me to mix up words, they just remind me of my walk as is:
Think different.
Just imagine.
The greatest tragedy is indifference.
Be all that you can be.

No doubt God has a sense of humor. Maybe He is up there saying, “Turley, you’re something else.” But our God is also a God of opportunity. If there are little “tricks” or triggers that get me to remember that I am His and am here to do His work, that’s probably a good thing. At the every moment, I must be prepared to answer the question, “Is it in you?” And I’m not talking Gatorade. And my “it” has a capital T.
