“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…”
– 1 Peter 3:15
This morning I was thinking about a discussion I had yesterday in church. Those thoughts actually led me to recall a quick, casual “conversation” I had with a student at school last week. We were walking on the playground and she said something to me (I can’t remember what), to which I asked “Why?” The reply from her was quick, “Mr. Turley, you ask WHY a lot.” Without hesitation I quickly responded, “and you need to be ready with an answer.” She didn’t respond, but I could tell she was thinking. I didn’t say anything to her about Scripture. I know that church is important to this young fourth grader because she has placed references to church and God in many of her writings and drawings. But I doubt that she connected my reply with those words from 1 Peter. I did not import my own beliefs upon her, but merely stated a sound educational principle, which happens to coincide with 1 Peter.
I’m not sure why I am sharing that story, other than perhaps to remind myself to stay immersed in His Word, for I never know the opportunity or place with which I can share it, implicitly or explicitly. He provides plenty of opportunities for me, I just need to be ready.
