Our Wonder Room

Stopping

It is better to have loafed and lost than never to have loafed at all.
-James Thurber, writer and cartoonist (1894-1961)

Yesterday I was talking with a friend about how busy and crazy life can be. At some point I think we even used the proverbial “chasing my own tail” cliché. So, reading the words above this morning were a great remember to do something else proverbial: stop and smell the roses.

As I think about the places and things that I did yesterday, can I remember even once stopping to take a deep breath and just enjoy “being”?

When was the last time I was really and truly “still”? (Psalm 46:10)

Merriam-Webster defines as LOAF as “to spend time in idleness”. Sounds like a perfect time to have a casual conversation with God. How easy would it be for me to thank Him for one thing I noticed because I stopped for a brief moment?

Okay, all that made me think of Robert Frost’s words:

Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening
By Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Maybe I will have chance a chance to stop and watch. And I pray that you will, too.
