“Until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light.”
1 Timothy 6:15
For this season of Advent I want to spend time reflecting on who God is. One of the best ways I could think of doing that is to think on the names by which God is known in His Word. In looking at those “titles”, I will see many ways finding God through my days. For example, if I think of God only as Creator, then I will fail to see so much more of who He is and how He reveals Himself.
There are MANY references to God as our King. When I think of kings, there are good ones and bad ones. Ones who use their power for good, and those who abuse their power. Those that really watch over, protect and are concerned for the people of their kingdom; and on the other side there are those, who take advantage of their power and were not very good stewards of their responsibilities.
So much of my comfort lies in knowing our God is one who uses His power only for the good of His children. While I am to submit to those earthly kings who have authority over me (1 Peter 2:13-17), ultimately I answer to only One…the King of Kings! How much greater is the One who rules over the ones who rule? How much more authority does He have?
