“The smallest things become great when God requires them of us; they are small only in themselves; they are always great when they are done for God, and when they serve to unite us with Him eternally.”
–François Fénelon
So, I read this about three times, each time my focus changing to different key words. At one point it was on the “God requires them of us” part. Really? What does that look like? How will I know when “that” small thing is “the” small thing upon which to act for God? After all there are so many “small things” that flitter across my mind each day. Random thoughts, and questions and promptings.
Maybe I’m going off in the wrong direction, but I think God gives us lots of “small” things on purpose. He made us. He knows how we are wired. He provides an array of “things”, of opportunities, not that we would pick and choose necessarily, but that something is going to hit us in our sweet spot and we will know we need to act on it. The gentle whisper possibly. One day it might be picking up the phone and calling a friend or relative we haven’t spoken to in a while. It could be doing something for your spouse that you might usually say “no” to doing. Who knows it could be the cliche “random act of kindness” toward a total stranger.
The bottom line is that God calls us each to action, toward serving His eternal kingdom. The calling is not often loud and obvious, but a gentle whisper:
“The Lord said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.'”
“Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.”
–1 Kings 19:11-13
May He move you today to some small act.
