“Always forgive your enemies – nothing annoys them so much.” – Oscar Wilde
The above quote was in one of my devotions yesterday. Then, last night as I was finishing up the second Harry Potter book, I found another connection to Romans. Connections can come from odd places. Anyway, it comes from Professor Dumbledore as he is talking to Harry:
“It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
As I reread Romans 12 this morning, there were just so many verses that talked about choices that I can make. The interesting part about the quote from Harry Potter is that it gets back to the fact that God knows my heart – for my abilities sometimes leave me short of where my choices wish me to be.
Okay, I’m not sure why, but just now I thought to read 1 Timothy 1, and came to verse 5: “The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.” The love we are commanded to share, even with our enemies, it comes from the heart and from one’s faith in Christ, not from one’s own ability to live it out. With God, all things are possible.
Romans 12:18 – “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”
