A dear friend of mine emailed me this morning and concluded his email with “We cannot develop without adversity.” Such awesome words. They caused me to stop and ponder, because I often think of the positive attitudes that I have developed as I look back on adversity. I’ve never really thought to look at the development that occurs as I shy away from adversity. For example, I don’t like flying. I’ll fly, but it better be a big plane and a flight that is as smooth as a baby’s bottom. But my hesitancy of flying, as I think about it now, may actually feed hesitancy in other areas. Like sharing my faith, or taking risks for Him.
The characteristics and experiences that we have, or don’t have, tend to feed each other. Imagine if I boldly stepped up and became a pilot (use lots of imagination). It gives me the willies to think about the other opportunities and challenges that I might then feel I could overcome. Even as I near finishing my teacher training, I can see God strengthening me in other areas. Who knows, maybe one of these days Lori may actually get me to fly one of those teeny tiny plans from Bellingham to Seattle.
Hebrews 13:5 tells us “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you.'”
