Our Wonder Room

Substitute

“Jesus said, ‘Go,’ but I through selfishness and indifference have refused to obey. I try to substitute ‘write,’ ‘send,’ or ‘give,’ for ‘go.’ I try to salve my conscience by turning over the task of ‘going’ to someone else and giving languidly for their support. Of course, I must send others where I cannot go. But because I can’t go across the world does not excuse me for refusing to go across the street.”

Usually I give you the original quote I read, but this time I personalized the above quote because it became more powerful for ME. It was filled with “church” and “we” but I knew it was speaking directly to me. Wow! “Writing” and “sending” and “giving” is good, even great, but “going” is better. I am thinking of myself and even these writings and books I have done and how they do, in some ways, stand in for me “going”. Yes, they are better than doing nothing, yes, they encourage those I can not be with, but there is always more that Christ would have me do.

I should always be searching for where Christ would have me face-to-face building disciples, encouraging others, sharing His love.

In His service,
Keith

Here is the original quote as I first read it this morning –

Jesus said, “Go,” but the church through selfishness and indifference has refused to obey. We try to substitute “write,” “send,” or “give,” for “go.” We try to salve our conscience by turning over the task of “going” to someone else and giving languidly for their support. Of course, we must send where we cannot go. But because we can’t go across the world does not excuse us for refusing to go across the street.
