Our Wonder Room

His Name: High Priest

“Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest.”
Hebrews 3:1

There is no way that I could have arrived at where I am at spiritually without the many years that I attended parochial school during my elementary and high school years. Those years are the foundation of my perception of a priest. Having said that, my foundation is quite different than many practicing (or practiced) Catholics will have because while I attended parochial school I was not Catholic so I did not participate in all sacraments and traditions. Nevertheless, I wanted to set aside my own definitions of a high priest. I wanted to open myself up to and contemplate the words from the writer of Hebrews from a perspective outside my personal experience.

After looking at different sources, including a look at Caiahpas the high priest in Matthew 26:57-67, where I found myself going was to Matthew’s Commentary. There I found a quite lengthy exposition on Hebrews 3:1, yet one word struck a chord with me…mediator. WOW! Jesus as mediator. LOVE THAT! The fact that Christ was appointed Mediator by God also means that God will accept Christ’s mediation. Who better would I want cheering for me?

He who bore all my sins is also sitting at the right hand of the Father, pleading on my behalf.
