Our Wonder Room

What Lays Beyond

From across the bay, Lori and I can see the pier that extends out into Bellingham Bay from Little Squalicum Beach. And many times we have ventured to the beach and seen, and touched, the pier up close. On multiple occasions, I’ve taken pictures of the pier from the beach at Little Squalicum. But this past Sunday my camera and I ventured onto the surface of the pier and tried to catch a better glimpse. The challenge is that the entry to the pier is gated and fenced to keep people out. As in a solid steel gate you can’t see through for the most part except for narrow gaps that allow peek-a-boo views. The photo above is one I took by placing my camera on the ground to shoot a wide-angle photo under the gate. It shows some but not all of what lies beyond…teasing the viewer.

All that to say, the more I looked at that photo, and dwelled on it, I kept coming back to Heaven. Heaven, this far away place of which I only have glimpses. I can read about heaven in the Bible, such as Revelation 21, which offers quite a picture of heaven. I can read other verses about Heaven as well…
– God’s dwelling place (Psalms 33:13).
– Where Christ is today (Acts 1:11).
– Where Christians go when they die (Philippians 1:21-23).
– The Father’s house (John 14:2).
– A city designed and built by God (Hebrews 11:10).
– A better country (Hebrews 11:16).
– Paradise (Luke 23:43).

Still, it is so hard to see, to picture. I am human. I want to know more. I want to know with more certainty about this place I hope to spend eternity with my Lord and Savior. Yet I know, whatever I picture in my mind, Heaven will be much greater.

What do I know of Heaven? What do I know of Holy? This song by Addison Road is one of my most absolute favorites…
